Perak: Fall Of The Silver State

Just when you thought the news cycle was all about Budget 2021 wrangling, Covid (Santa, make it go away please) and idiots forcing non-halal sections in supermarkets to close (go pull this stunt in Langkawi if you dare la bro), up popped Perak to give us something else to stress about. 

Here’s the skinny: Perak head honcho Ahmad Faizal Azumu (side note: we used to love making fun of his surname but the last time we did it somebody scolded us for mocking his dad ), got a foot in the backside and was unceremoniously ousted as menteri besar in a move he’s said he didn’t see coming but really should have.

Bersatu man Ahmad Faizal had been state supremo since Pakatan Harapan won the elections in 2018 and clung to power even when the gomen fell to Perikatan. Sadly for him, his second marriage was a rocky one and Umno’s decided they’ve had enough – according to Umno lah! 

Faizal’s vowed a smooth transition, promising he won’t seek elections. Good-o. But the question then is: what the heck happens now?

Here’s where it gets complicated. Umno has the most seats in the state and therefore the strongest claim to the MB post. BUT (we like big ‘buts’ and we cannot lie), Umno’ll still need Bersatu’s support to cobble together a majority to form the gomen – you know, the same Bersatu whose MB they just fired. 

And if Bersatu doesn’t play ball – Umno well may have to do the unthinkable: get into bed with Pakatan, including sworn enemy DAP, to form a unity government.
