Budget 2021: Govt Showers Propaganda Unit With RM86 Mil
Does the phrase Kita Semua Penghasut sound familiar? It should. It’s one of the most iconic phrases of recent years, in the dark end days of Najib Razak’s reign. Coined by graphic artist Fahmi Reza (he of the clown face fame), ‘Kita Semua Penghasut’ became a clarion call for those fighting for civil liberties.
Last week, we promised a big new thing this month – and now is the time for the reveal. Fahmi Reza, Le artist himself, will be collaborating with us to create special weekly graphics, which will go out every Saturday.
If you’ve been living under a coconut shell, or just got off the boat (and out of quarantine!) and landed in our fine country, Fahmi’s a wizard with the pen, has a wicked sense of humour and is a keen observer of the Malaysian form, most especially of our pakcik and makcik in politics. You can check out more of his work here.
With the budget of all budgets being tabled yesterday, it was only right for our first panel to feature Budget 2021 and the oh so generous pocket money Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin & co decided to put aside for Jasa, their born again propaganda arm.
Considering we have a pandemic and its associated costs on one hand, and measly allocations for run-down schools and mental healthcare on the other, is it any wonder that Malaysians are already up in arms? Seriously folks, you gotta read it to believe it. Talk about mengenang Jasa, eh?
Fahmi Reza is one of Malaysia's most iconic political graphic artists and activists. Using his wizardry with the pen and his wicked sense of humour, he calls out government and political incompetence and deceit through graphics and posters.
